DARTINGTON GLASS 1971 Promotional Booklet - Rare!!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200419205507

This is a seldom seen little booklet by Dartington Glass from 1971. I have never seen this come up for sale on Ebay before. This one doesn't even appear in the book "Frank Thrower and Dartington Glass" book by Eve Thrower and Mark Hill. It is a lovely period piece with lovely b&w photos by, I think, Mike Newton, the company photographer. It is illustrated with shots of the factory, workers and glass beng made. It tells the story of Dartington Hall , the charity set up to assist areas of North Devon in need of regeneration, and without whom Dartington Glass would not exist. The history ( a short history at the time!) of Dartington Glass from 1967 is included and explanation of glass-blowing.

Dartington Glass was started in June 1967 when the Dartington Hall Trust, a Devon based charitable organisation that developed local businesses to maintain the rural life in the area, were looking for a new venture. After 5 years of discussions and negotiations the factory had started with Frank Thrower as Sales Director and designer. Frank was to be the main designer for the next 20 years and produced over 500 designs. Sadly, Frank died in 1987 after a long illness. He is now regarded as one of the top glass designers of the 20th Century having produced many iconic designs. Compared to other companies Dartington has not quite reached the status of other companies such as Whitefriars in so much as monetary value of its glass. Certainly though the designs hold their heads high in the company of others.

The booklet is approximately 6" x 8" in size. It contains 10 pages and is in very good condition with only minor wear.

RONALD STENNETT-WILLSON Exhibition Catalogue 2004

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200419238731

This is the catalogue for an exhibition of glass designs from 1954 - 1980 from the Graham Cooley Collection held in the summer of 2004 at the Fermoy Gallery in King's Lynn.

This little booklet packs a lot in to it's 31 pages. A celebration of the work of one of Britain's most eminent glass designers, Ronald Stennett-Willson, it tells his story of his career in the glass industry starting as a young man before WWII and continuing after through his work with Wuidart, Lemington, King's Lynn and Wedgwood. It is very well illustrated with lovely photos of glass and archived company pictures. The photos of Graham Cooley's glass in particular are a treat.

The catalogue is in excellent condition. It's approx. 8" x 6".

WHITEFRIARS 1966 GLASS CATALOGUE & PRICE LIST - RARE!!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200419205519

This is your chance to purchase a rare Whitefriars publication. This is the catalogue from 1966 which saw the introduction of Patterns 9650 through to 9662. It has 61 pages of glass available that year including some great colour photos and black and white pictures. At the back it has the Pattern Number list. This was the last catalogue issued before Baxter's textured range was launched. A number of the items in the catalogue have red crosses over them as they were discontinued for 1966. The printers were instructed to do this and basically they modified the previous years catalogue! Ocean Green and Green Cased in Clear Crystal are also deleted for this year. There are a few colour photos in this catalogue with streaky knobblies and thin walled soda items amongst others being shown.

The original price list that went with the catalogue is also included with this. If anything this is rarer than the catalogue!

These catalogues were not given out to the public at the time as they were trade catalogues only. Dealers and shops were given them along with price lists.

It is approximately 11" x 5.5" and ring bound. It is in very good condition with only minor wear as expected after 43 years! It's your chance to have at least one Whitefriars catalogue to HAND instead of trawling through them on the web!!!

Michael Parkington was one of the world's foremost glass collectors. Parkington, died in 1994 aged 71, he was a solicitor who's most famous case was while in South Africa defending Nelson Mandela on treason charges in the early Sixties.

As with many collectors, Parkington didn't just have glass as a passion. He had earlier collected silver. His Kensington flat was packed to the rafters with glass of all ages, types and companies. Monart, Vasart, Gray-Stan, Stuart, Nazeing, Stevens & Williams, Varnish Glass, 18th & 19th Century Glass and much more. He was introduced to Whitefriars glass in the early nineties and very quickly built up an amazing collection from Harry Powell to Geoffrey Baxter pieces. 3 years after his death his collection was put up for auction at Christie's in a sale split into two parts such was the scale of the auction.

This catalogue is the sale catalogue "The Parkington Collection Part I" which contains the Whitefriars glass. It has colour photographs of some stunning glass, much of it very rare. He had managed to obtain a Ruby Cello vase by Baxter of which only two are known. There is a lot of other companies glass, as previously mentioned, in it including some fantastic Monart glass. There are a couple of mis-described "Whitefriars" vases but considering this was all collected "pre-internet" he obviously was a great researcher.

The catalogue is in very good condition with only a slight tear to the top of the spine. All pages are very good. There are 62 pages detailing 525 lots. I will include a copy of the prices achieved.

I currently have the catalogue for Part II of this collection on Ebay as well. I can combine postage on these two catalogues.

WHITEFRIARS GLASS James Powell & Sons of London

By Wendy Evans, Catherine Ross, and Alex Werner

This is a superb copy of the much sought after Wendy Evans book on Whitefriars Glass. It contains 398 pages of the most comprehensive study of the Whitefriars Glassworks and its glass starting with beginnings in 1680 right to the very end in 1980.

Published in 1995 by the Museum of London and now out of print, it represents a mammoth task of collating all the information donated to the museum after the company's demise. There were numerous contributions by so many people in the field of glassmaking and collecting in making this book. It is generally recognised as the "bible" of Whitefriars Glass. It contains a fascinating insight to life at the factories and companies in charge of the glassworks for its 300 years. A vast amount of information is taken from the Jame Powell & Sons own archives and materials. The workers, customers, suppliers, company finances and of course the glass is studied in great depth.

Pattern books from 1830 up to 1940 are included covering the lesser known "Powell" glass. From then on there are many pages from the subsequent catalogues up to 1980. It also has a comprehensive section on the Powell's largely unsung Stained Glass department. This book in conjunction with Lesley Jackson's book and the excellent websites now online completes all the information to arm the collector or dealer with a huge advantage of knowledge with Whitefriars glass.

I have my own copy of this book which has proved invaluable and is always ready to hand! The page samples below are scanned from my well thumbed copy of the book in order to preserve the condition of the book I am offering for sale. The condition of the book is very good with the tiniest of wear to the outer corners. It really is negligible. It is still in its outer dust cover.

DARTINGTON GLASS 1970 Catalogue - Very Rare!!!

This is a seldom seen catalogue by Dartington Glass from 1970. I have never seen a Dartington catalogue come up for sale on Ebay before. This one doesn't even appear in the book "Frank Thrower and Dartington Glass" book by Eve Thrower and Mark Hill. It is a fantastic book with lovely photos by Mike Newton, the company photographer, and each piece accompanied with witty, sometimes risqué descriptions riddled with puns. This catalogue marked a dramatic departure in style and quality compared to previous ones which were cheaply made affairs. In this catalogue several of Frank Thrower's best designs appear such as the FT1 Tankard, FT15 Ships Decanter, Nipple vase etc.

Certainly though the designs hold their heads high in the company of others.

The catalogue is approximately 9" x 9" in size. It contains 76 pages and is in very good condition with only minor wear.

BRITISH and ORNAMENTAL TABLE GLASS by L.M. Angus Butterworth

This book is a fascinating look at the history of glassmaking in Britain, a view of "current" glass companies as they were in the 1950's and also descriptions of the principles of design, manufacture and decoration of glass.

Many glass manufacturers of the time are included such as James Powell & Sons (Whitefriars), Royal Brierly Crystal, Stevens & Williams, Thomas Webb, Sowerby, Edinburgh Crystal and Waterford amongst others. Through the history of British glassmaking it covers Bristol Glass, Nailsea, Jacobite Glasses by William Beilby, Verzelini the Venetian, Tudor Glassmaking, Apsley Pellat etc.

How the glass industry was faring at the time, home and abroad, is discussed. Several of the techniques of glass making are described and there is a glossary of terms used within the industry. Throughout the book there are 216 photographs, virtually all b&w, showing some stunning and very interesting glass and factory photos.

In the 21st century it's difficult to get an understanding of what the glass industry was like in it's heyday of the mid 20th century. This book written, at that time, takes you back then, as it was, which any modern book would struggle to do.

The book is ex-library with some library stamps. It is in good condition with some marks to the cover. The whole book is still intact and quite tight. Very readable. Contains 123 pages.

Christies - The Ian Turner Collection of Monart Glass

This is the auction catalogue for one of the largest and most important collections of Monart glass sold by Christies of South Kensington, London in 2003. The Ian Turner Collection of Monart Glass saw a fascinating and stunning collection of Monart brought together for sale on behalf of one the foremost experts and collectors of this glass.

Ian Turner started collecting Monart glass with his first piece over 25 years ago. His curiosity of the factory and it's history got the better of him. He embarked on a remarkable quest of researching and collecting all there was to know about Monart. From meeting Paul Ysart, other researchers, museum experts, collectors and ex-workers he amassed a wealth of knowledge. He has contributed to articles on Ysart and Monart glass and is a co-author of the book "Ysart Glass". Eventually it seems there nothing more to collect and Ian Turner decided to sell of his collection and concentrate on something else!

The auction had 142 lots of Monart vases, bowls, paperweights and ephemera. The catalogue has many colour photographs which are invaluable to the collector. Included in the sale were unique pieces bought from Paul Ysart's own collection.

The catalogue contains 26 pages and is in very good condition with only minor wear.

James Powell & Sons had been supplying Stained Glass over the Atlantic from 1852 but James Hogan was arguably the foremost designer for them.

Journal of The Glass Association Geoffrey Baxter Story

This is Volume 4 of the Journal of the Glass Association released in 1992. The Glass Association, founded in 1983 and based in Broadfield House Glassmuseum seeks to research glass and educate all those interested in glass in all matters to do with the subject. In 1985 they released their first journal which they then released roughly every three years. It generally deals with the history of glass from the 18th to 20th centuries. They have articles written by some of the most eminent experts, authors and collectors of glass.

Arguably one of the most interesting articles in Volume 4 is a great piece by Brian Cargin and Basil Loveridge on Whitefriars Lookalikes, 7 pages long with b&w photos. After the Whitefriars factory shut in 1980 interest in the company waned for several years, apart from some dedicated collectors and dealers, and much of the knowledge was lost. This article predates the Jackson and Evans books amd exhibitions of 1996. It could be seen as a first attempt to boost the profile of Whitefriars glass and in particular the designs of the great Geoffrey Baxter. It is basically the story of Baxter's life as a designer for Whitefriars, from his early days as a student, to joining the company in 1954 and all the way to the end of Whitefriars in 1980. The article was compiled using tapes from interviews with Baxter by the authors.

There is also a excellent article written by Lesley Jackson about the British Glass industry in the 1950's. This includes references to Whitefriars, Webb, Chance and Stuart glass amongst others.

Below is the full list of all the articles in the Journal. If you require any more information on these then let me know.

Early Nineteenth Century Patterns from the Ford Ranken Archive.
The Accounts Books of John Unsworth - Glass Engraver of Warrington.
Glass Furniture in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries.
"Synchronising with Contemporary Taste" - the British Glass Industry in the 1950's.
Geoffrey P.Baxter, Glass Designer.
The Journal is in very good condition with minimal wear. The whole journal has 50 pages.

Journal of The Glass Association Whitefriars Lookalikes

SOLD!!!

Journal of The Glass Association Volume 5 - Whitefriars Lookalikes

This is Volume 5 of the Journal of the Glass Association released in 1997.

Arguably one of the most interesting articles in Volume 5 is a great piece by Lesley Jackson on Whitefriars Lookalikes, 15 pages long with colour and b&w photos. Lesley Jackson is most famous for her work on the book "Whitefriars Glass: The Art of James Powell & Sons" which was produced to accompany the exhibition of the same name at Manchester City Art Galleries in 1996. The article in this particular journal follows on from this in that one of the difficulties experienced in researching for the exhibition were the sheer number of pieces by contemporaries that were so similar. After the Whitefriars factory shut in 1980 any interest in the company waned for several years and much of the knowledge was lost.

The article was written to complement Jacksons book. The exhibition involved extensive research to weed out non-Whitefriars pieces by obtaining hard facts rather than relying on long held assumptions. The article starts off with the mid Nineteenth century and goes up to the pre WWII era. There is some info on post war glass but as this is so well documented and catalogued, in depth analysis is not so important. Many other factories are covered such as Webb, Stuart, Stevens & Williams and the Stourbridge area where similarities exist.

Below is the full list of all the articles in the Journal. If you require any more information on these then let me know.

A Lost Stourbridge Glassworks Rediscovered.
Cellars of Glass.
Three Edinburgh Engravers: The Work of Adolph Melzer, Augustine Storch & Alexander Beutlich Millar
